Ecological methods of wood impregnation and disposal of wooden waste impregnated with hazardous agents

Wood waste impregnated with oils containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons – PAHs (especially wooden energy and telephone poles or railway sleepers) is a hazardous waste to the environment due to high contents of highly toxic and carcinogenic aromatics, which mainly are: anthracene, fluorene (diphenylisocyanate) phenanthrene, benzo(a)anthracene and benzo(a)pyrene. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons containing those substances are poorly soluble in water, are not biodegradable and have properties to absorb in soil and accumulate in plant, animal and human tissues. They work mutagenic, and their presence in living organisms, makes them more susceptible to cancer.

Wood waste such as telephone and energy poles or railway sleepers (impregnated with oils containing PAHs) from the demolition and renovations, are classified as hazardous waste (code 170204) and according to the law are subjected to special supervision and required to register.

Known, authorized for use method of disposing wood waste from energy and telephone poles or railway sleepers, is their disposal by storing in a separate hazardous waste landfills with effluent positions armed with sealed membrane. It is an expensive way and does not entirely dispose of hazardous waste.
